"Hey future Beijing students, I was asked to write a quick blurb about my experiences studying in China. Many of you will find the level of support from your schools pretty minimal. Most teachers and staff in the schools don't speak much English and their idea of an orientation is a cop giving you a laundry list of things that will get you thrown in jail. The dorms are at best sub-par and not conductive to a good studying environment. You will often be isolated from Chinese students in an International Student Dorm, usually off campus. I actually learned more Korean in the first few months than Chinese trying to figure out how to communicate with my roomate. Many students also didn't like the areas their schools where in an spent most of there time traveling back and forth to interesting destinations in other areas of the city. Many students decided to get apartments of campus, but because landlords will almost always only rent an apartment for 1 year at a time and students usually only study for 4 months they would have to pay for 6 months and then just bail on the security deposit. Then once they found a place they have an impossible time handling the utilities, internet and negotiating with a landlord who doesn't speak a word of English.I have been working with East Apartments to make a student friendly service.
